AAdvantage is two programs wearing one name. Awards on American's own flights are dynamically priced and rarely exciting. Awards on its Oneworld partners still follow a published chart — and that chart prices Qatar Airways Qsuite, Cathay Pacific business, and Japan Airlines premium cabins at rates that embarrass the cash fares. The partner chart is the reason to hold the miles.
Earning is the puzzle. AAdvantage sat outside the transferable-currency ecosystem for years; today Bilt Rewards and Citi ThankYou both reach it, which quietly makes American miles buildable without ever boarding a plane. We value them at 1.5¢ — with the honest caveat that partner saver space, not the chart, is the scarce resource.

The sweet spots
Qatar Airways Qsuite to the Middle East
The best business-class product flying, at AAdvantage's published partner rate from the U.S. East Coast. Doha onward connections put most of Asia and Africa in reach on the same award.
Cathay Pacific and JAL to Asia
The classic AAdvantage double: two of Asia's finest carriers, priced off the partner chart. Cathay space shows best far out and last-minute; JAL releases in-between. Neither is searchable everywhere — search partner engines, book with AA.
Web Specials on American metal
Dynamic pricing occasionally works for you: Web Specials undercut the old saver levels on off-peak domestic and short-haul international. Good for burning small balances; never transfer points in for them.
Watch out for
- Domestic saver awards on American's own metal keep getting rarer — the miles are for partners, not for Tuesday's flight to Dallas.
- Partner award space (especially Qsuite and JAL) is scarce and irregular. The chart is a menu, not a promise.
- Some partner awards must still be ticketed by phone, and married-segment logic can hide space online that an agent can see.
- Web Special awards are non-changeable and carry stricter rules — read the fare conditions before burning miles on one.
