January

Winter peak in the far-north, sun-seekers' month in the Caribbean and Southeast Asia, and the first serious ski weeks in the Alps and Rockies.

January is deep winter in the Northern Hemisphere, which makes it simultaneously the most expensive month in sun-destinations (Caribbean, Southeast Asia, Australian Pacific) and the cheapest in cold-weather cities (Paris, Rome, London, New York, Copenhagen). The trade-off favours different travellers. Aurora season is at its annual peak — Iceland, Lapland, Tromsø all deliver their statistically most-viewable weeks. Ski season is finally running at full capacity after December-holiday unpredictability. Carnival season starts in late January in Rio de Janeiro (though the main week is February). And Japan's winter food culture — ramen, kaiseki's winter vegetables, snow-country onsen — is at its best.

Northern Lights at peak

Iceland, Finnish Lapland, and Tromsø have their most statistically viewable weeks. 4-5 night trips give ~70% probability of a good sighting.

Our Northern Lights hub

Caribbean + sun destinations

Dominica, Barbados, Turks & Caicos — peak weather, peak prices. Book 6+ months ahead for desirable hotels.

Japan winter food season

Sapporo Snow Festival late January-February. Kyoto winter kaiseki. Snow-country onsen (Kinosaki, Ginzan) are at peak.

Jordan + Egypt dry season

Petra and the Sahara at their most pleasant temperatures. Red Sea water 22°C for diving.

Ski season running

Alps, Rockies, Hokkaido, Dolomites all operational. Dry powder snow weeks usually mid-January to early-February.

Plan ahead this month
  • Book cherry-blossom trips to Japan for late March / early April (6-12 months ahead for good hotels)
  • Research European Easter week travel for early April (3-4 months ahead)
  • Book Mediterranean summer holidays (6 months ahead for Amalfi, Santorini)
Consider avoiding
  • !Destinations with hurricane-season after-effects (certain Caribbean islands rebuilding)
  • !Southeast Asia's cooler but shorter-day month — March-April is more fully aligned
02

February

Carnival in Rio and Venice, pre-sakura shoulder in Japan, and the shoulder before Caribbean spring-break pricing arrives.

February is the month of pre-spring shoulder: cold enough in Europe and North America that crowds remain thin, warm enough in Southeast Asia that travel is pleasant, cool enough in Egypt/Morocco/Jordan that outdoor exploration is comfortable. Carnival is the month's signature event — Rio's Carnival (the Saturday-Tuesday before Ash Wednesday), Venice's mask festival (10 days ending on Shrove Tuesday), and Nice's Carnaval. February is also aurora's second-peak month (clearer skies than December, still long nights). Japan's winter is waning; by late February pre-cherry-blossom timing research begins for March-April trips.

Rio + Venice Carnival

Rio's Carnival (4-5 days before Ash Wednesday) is the world's biggest street party. Venice's is calmer, more photographic — costumed masked balls across the city for 10 days.

Aurora second-peak

Second-best aurora month after January. Clearer skies than December; nights still long enough.

Our Northern Lights hub

Plum blossom in Japan

Late February plum blossom (ume) precedes sakura by 6 weeks. Osaka Castle Park, Kitano Tenmangu Shrine in Kyoto — less crowded than cherry blossom, subtler but present.

Taipei cherry blossom (earliest)

Yangmingshan National Park north of Taipei has the earliest Asian cherry blossom — late February to mid-March. Pre-Japan window for travellers without the flexibility for a March/April trip.

Plan ahead this month
  • Finalize cherry-blossom Japan bookings
  • Book European summer tourism (July-August is 3-4 months out; hotels in Amalfi/Santorini/Greek islands need 4+ months)
  • Research desert/Red Sea trips before the heat arrives
Consider avoiding
  • !Schools' spring-break-overlap dates (late February-early March) — 40% price surge in US domestic destinations, Caribbean, Mexico
03

March

Cherry blossom in Japan (Tokyo late March, Kyoto early April), shoulder season in Europe, and the last winter weeks in the Alps.

March is the month Japan pivots — Tokyo's cherry blossom typically peaks March 27-April 5, Kyoto a few days later. Hotel inventory for the bloom window disappears 6+ months out. Europe begins to warm (Mediterranean cities are pleasant, Northern Europe still cold). St Patrick's Day in Ireland (global-city celebrations included). March is the month the ski-season ends in most resorts (last good snow typically to mid-March in the Alps, later in the Rockies). It's also the start of whale-watching season in Mexico's Baja and South Africa's Hermanus. Budget-conscious European travel (Paris, Rome, Lisbon) is at its best: mid-March hotels often 30-40% cheaper than June equivalents.

Japan cherry blossom

Tokyo peak approximately March 27 - April 5; Kyoto April 2-8. Forecast refines weekly from mid-January. Book restaurants + hotels 6+ months ahead.

Our Cherry Blossom hub

Iceland + Faroes late winter

Still aurora season through mid-March. Days lengthen rapidly. Last reliable ski weeks at smaller resorts.

Our Iceland itinerary

European city shoulder season

Paris, Rome, Madrid at mid-March: temperatures 10-16°C, crowds thin, pricing ~70% of peak. The smart-budget month for European city trips.

Texas + California spring-break

US domestic spring-break peaks. Austin's SXSW festival (March 10-19), Sonoma wine country at bud-break, desert wildflowers in the Mojave.

Plan ahead this month
  • Summer European holidays (June-August) — final 3-month window
  • Research fall foliage trips (New England + Japan need 4-6 months)
  • Book whale-watching trips for April-June (Mexico Baja, South Africa Hermanus)
Consider avoiding
  • !Japan Golden Week (late April-early May) period — domestic tourism doubles, everything books out
  • !European Easter week (early April) if crowd-averse — prices and tourism surge
04

April

Kyoto cherry blossom week, Morocco/Jordan/Egypt at their best, and pre-summer Europe before the peak-pricing curtain.

April in Kyoto (April 1-8 typically) is the travel industry's singular cultural moment — if you haven't booked by now, it's too late. April is also the best month for North African and Middle Eastern travel — Morocco, Jordan, Egypt all hit their ideal 22-25°C daytime temperatures. Europe begins its shoulder-to-peak transition: the first half of April remains shoulder; mid-April onward approaches peak pricing. Spring in the Netherlands (Keukenhof tulips early-mid April) and Washington DC (cherry blossom on the Tidal Basin, peaks late March). India is hot (pre-monsoon), Southeast Asia is hot (pre-monsoon humid), and Australia is pleasant as it transitions to autumn.

Kyoto sakura peak

Japan's defining travel moment. Book 6+ months ahead for any hotels; restaurant reservations lock 2-3 months ahead.

Our 7-day Japan itinerary

Morocco / Jordan / Egypt

Mid-20s daytime temperatures, cool nights, low humidity. Camel treks to the Sahara at their most comfortable.

Our 10-day Morocco itinerary

Netherlands tulip season

Keukenhof Gardens open late March through mid-May; peak mid-April. Best visited Tuesday-Thursday to avoid weekend crowds.

Washington DC + Japan elsewhere

Washington Cherry Blossom Festival peaks late March-early April; DC trip pairs well with the NYC spring weekend market culture.

Australia autumn

Sydney 20-24°C, Melbourne 18-22°C. Last comfortable weeks before winter. Uluru at its most photographable; daytime temps drop to manageable 25-28°C.

Plan ahead this month
  • Summer Mediterranean — Final call for Amalfi, Greek islands, Balearic Islands
  • Iceland Ring Road in summer (May-August), book 2-3 months ahead
  • Japan autumn-foliage trip (November) — 6 months ahead
Consider avoiding
  • !Japan Golden Week (April 29 - May 5) period — domestic tourism doubles
  • !Holy Week / Semana Santa in Spain + Latin America — hotels surge 40-80%
05

May

Europe's shoulder-to-peak moment, Costa Rica's green season shoulder, and the last ideal window for the North African classical circuit.

May is Europe's sweet spot — post-Easter, pre-peak-summer, weather-pleasant. Mediterranean cities (Rome, Barcelona, Lisbon) at 20-26°C, northern cities (Paris, London, Amsterdam) at 15-20°C. Crowds manageable, prices moderate. The Alps have hiking-accessible weather starting late May. Costa Rica enters its green season (May-November): rainier but 30-40% cheaper, wildlife easier to spot. Morocco + Jordan still excellent; Egypt begins to get hot. Australia is in autumn, New Zealand in late autumn — both pleasant with smaller crowds.

Europe pre-peak window

Mid-May is the year's best balance of weather + crowds for classical European city trips. Prices 20-30% below July-August.

Iceland Ring Road begins

F-roads (highland interior) not yet open in May; Ring Road (coastal) fully open. 18-hour daylight, manageable crowds.

Our Iceland itinerary

Costa Rica shoulder

Green season starts: afternoon rains, lush landscape, wildlife visible, 30% price savings. Worth it for travellers willing to accept some rain.

Our Costa Rica itinerary

Iceland Puffin season begins

Puffins return to nesting sites in mid-May. Dyrhólaey (south coast) and Látrabjarg (west) are the access points.

Plan ahead this month
  • Autumn cherry-blossom-style Japan trips (October-November foliage)
  • Christmas European markets (book hotels 6-7 months ahead)
  • Ski-season 2026-27 (the Alps + Rockies peak hotels sell out 8+ months ahead)
Consider avoiding
  • !Cannes Film Festival week (mid-May) for the French Riviera — prices surge
  • !European city hotels on the specific long-weekend dates in early May (Labour Day 1 May + Ascension weekend)
06

June

European summer starts, Caribbean hurricane-season risk opens, and Scandinavia's midnight-sun weeks begin.

June transitions Europe into summer (peak pricing starts mid-June), which is also when Scandinavia peaks differently — midnight sun in the far north, long bright evenings everywhere, Faroese and Finnish summer cottage culture at its height. Caribbean hurricane season officially begins June 1 (peaks August-October), so beach-destination travel there starts thinning. Mediterranean summer tourism crescendos, though shoulder-tier islands (Milos, Crete's quieter end, Albania's Riviera) remain reasonable. Pride Month brings major urban festivals in late June (New York, São Paulo, Toronto, Madrid).

Scandinavian midnight sun

Reykjavik 21 hours of daylight; Tromsø 24-hour sun June-July. Norway's fjord cruises operate at peak. Swedish crayfish parties begin.

Iceland peak

18+ hours of daylight, Ring Road fully open, F-roads (highlands) open from mid-June. Puffin colonies active. The busiest month is July; June is better for crowds.

Mediterranean not-yet-peak

Amalfi, Santorini, Ibiza, Croatia all busy but not yet at August-peak. First 2 weeks of June are a smart window.

New York summer rhythm

Central Park in June is one of the world's great urban parks. Summer Streets (Saturdays) pedestrianizes Park Avenue. The Shakespeare in the Park season begins.

Botswana safari peak begins

Okavango Delta dry season begins June-October. Animals concentrate around water; vegetation thins. Book 12+ months ahead for best camps.

Our Southern Africa itinerary
Plan ahead this month
  • Christmas markets (6 months)
  • Aurora season 2026-27 (book Finnish/Icelandic hotels 6+ months ahead)
  • Cherry blossom 2027 (12 months)
Consider avoiding
  • !European peak weekends (last 2 weekends of June) for city hotel stays
  • !Hurricane-watch Caribbean destinations without travel insurance
07

July

Peak Europe, peak Southeast Asia monsoon, shoulder-season Southern Africa safari, and the month budget-conscious travellers mostly avoid.

July is the globally-most-expensive month for Northern Hemisphere leisure travel — peak summer school-holiday overlap creates sustained demand. European Mediterranean cities + beaches are saturated; hotel prices are at annual peaks. Northern Europe is pleasant but expensive. Southeast Asia is deep-monsoon (the humid, wet half of the year). Southern Africa is entering its safari peak (dry season). North American destinations (national parks, coastal towns) are similarly peak. For travellers with date-flexibility, July is often the month to deliberately avoid Europe and travel somewhere else (South Africa, Patagonia, Australia's winter southern gaming, Japan's summer festivals).

Scotland highland hiking

14 hours of daylight, 18-22°C temperatures, manageable midges after June. The Highlands, Skye, and Outer Hebrides at their operational best.

Southern Africa safari peak

Dry season peak — animals at water sources, thin vegetation, easier game-spotting. Book 12 months ahead for Botswana/Kruger premier camps.

Japan summer festivals

Gion Matsuri in Kyoto (entire month, climaxing July 17). Fireworks festivals (hanabi taikai) across Japan from mid-July through August. Humid (30°C+, 80% humidity) but atmospheric.

Montenegro + Albania quiet summer

The less-touristed Mediterranean alternative. Kotor Bay, Albanian Riviera — 25% cheaper than Croatia equivalents with similar weather.

Patagonia winter

Off-season but operational. Winter hiking + base camps at dramatically reduced prices. Cold but clear.

Plan ahead this month
  • Autumn European trips (October-November, 3-4 months)
  • Ski season 2026-27 (Alps and Rockies, 5-6 months)
  • Cherry blossom 2027 Japan
Consider avoiding
  • !Mediterranean beach destinations without 6+ month booking lead
  • !Italian Ferragosto mid-August holiday crush, which starts building end of July
08

August

Ferragosto closes Italy, Paris half-empties, and London's Notting Hill Carnival takes over the city's August Bank Holiday.

August in Europe has a specific character — Italian Ferragosto (August 15 and the surrounding 2 weeks) shuts most domestic businesses, leaving cities to tourists and leaving seaside towns packed. Paris in August is the famous emptying-out: many independent restaurants close, locals leave en masse for the south, the city becomes strangely calm. August's Edinburgh Fringe Festival is the world's largest performing-arts festival (5,000+ shows). London's Notting Hill Carnival (late August bank holiday) is the city's biggest street event. Caribbean hurricane risk is at annual peak. Southeast Asia still monsoon. Australia in mid-winter.

Edinburgh Fringe

August 1-26 — 5,000+ shows across the city. Comedy, theatre, music, dance. Book accommodation 6+ months ahead; hotels double in price.

Notting Hill Carnival (London)

Late August bank holiday. 2+ million attendees; the biggest Caribbean-diaspora street festival outside the Caribbean. Saturday family day, Sunday adult carnival proper.

Mongolia + Central Asia summer

Mongolian Naadam festival (July but extends into early August). The Gobi at peak accessibility. Kyrgyzstan yurt camps operational at peak.

Paris half-empty

Paradoxically a decent time to visit Paris — restaurants are thinner, museums quieter, parks fuller, and the atmosphere distinctly different. Downside: many smaller restaurants closed.

Iceland whale-watching peak

Húsavík and Reykjavik whale tours report 95%+ sighting rates in August — humpback, minke, occasional blue.

Plan ahead this month
  • Fall European trips (mid-October) — 2-3 months ahead
  • Christmas market trips (4-5 months)
  • Aurora season 2026-27
Consider avoiding
  • !Italian coastal destinations without serious advance booking
  • !London on Notting Hill Carnival weekend if crowd-averse
  • !Paris if you want the bustling Paris experience — it's quieter than expected
09

September

Europe's shoulder-season sweet spot begins, Japan pre-autumn, and the best month for European city trips on a per-experience-per-dollar basis.

September is often cited by travel editors as the single best travel month for Europe — weather excellent (Mediterranean still warm, Northern Europe pleasant), crowds half of July-August, prices 20-30% below peak. Post-Labor-Day US domestic travel drops significantly. India's monsoon winds down, the trekking season in Nepal and northern India begins. Morocco and Jordan are genuinely pleasant again (post-summer-heat). Argentina and Chile enter spring. Caribbean hurricane season still active.

European cities at their best

Paris, Rome, Barcelona, Lisbon all at 22-26°C, crowds halved, pricing 20-30% below peak. The shoulder-season window editors repeatedly cite as the best time to visit Europe.

Santorini + Milos shoulder

Sea still 22°C, ferries fully operational, pricing ~65% of August. A week in either island in late September is the editors' repeat recommendation.

Our 10-day Greece itinerary

Japan pre-autumn

Typhoon season lingers early September but by mid-month the country shifts toward autumn. Pre-foliage crowds manageable.

Chile + Patagonia emerging

Spring in the Southern Hemisphere. Patagonia reopens. Atacama Desert excellent. Chilean wine country (Colchagua) at its most pleasant.

Oktoberfest begins (late September)

Oktoberfest runs roughly September 20 - October 6. Munich hotels double in price; book 9+ months ahead.

Plan ahead this month
  • Christmas markets (only 3 months out — last call for Strasbourg, Nuremberg)
  • Winter-sun Caribbean destinations
  • Northern Lights (apply for best dates)
10

October

Autumn colour month globally, Middle East and Egypt at their peak, and the Caribbean hurricane season winding down.

October is the month of autumn everywhere — New England fall foliage (peak mid-month), Kyoto and Tokyo momiji (late October through November), Quebec + Vermont + New Hampshire, the Dolomites' larch groves. The Middle East and Egypt enter their best travel window (October-April). Caribbean hurricane season winds down end of month. Oktoberfest concludes (first weekend of October). Indian festival season intensifies — Durga Puja in Kolkata (early October), Diwali (late October / early November). Mexico's Day of the Dead approaches (late October-November 2).

New England fall foliage

Peak mid-October in Vermont + New Hampshire. Kancamagus Highway is the postcard drive. Hotels at 95%+ occupancy across October; book 6+ months ahead.

Our Fall Foliage hub

Egypt + Jordan + Morocco peak

25-28°C daytime, cool evenings. The six-month window October-April is the only comfortable time for outdoor exploration; early October is the start.

Our 10-day Egypt itinerary

Kyoto momiji (autumn leaves)

Kyoto peak is typically late November; October is pre-peak but atmospheric. Eikan-do, Tofuku-ji are the famous viewing spots.

Mexico Day of the Dead

October 31 - November 2. Oaxaca and Michoacán (Pátzcuaro) are the most atmospheric traditions. Book flights + accommodation 3-6 months ahead.

Plan ahead this month
  • Winter ski season booking (Alps + Rockies, final windows)
  • Cherry blossom 2027 Japan
  • Christmas markets (2 months out)
11

November

Kyoto momiji peak, Indian wedding season begins, and the Caribbean enters its second sweet spot.

November in Kyoto is the year's single most concentrated cultural-tourism moment after April — autumn leaves (momiji) peak around November 20-25, and the temple gardens of the Higashiyama district are temporarily as busy as Kyoto ever gets outside sakura. Indian wedding season begins (November-February is peak); wedding-tourism-adjacent travel to India is busy. Caribbean hurricane risk clears by early November. Southeast Asia transitions from monsoon to dry. South America's Patagonia enters its best window. Thanksgiving (US) + Dia de los Muertos (Mexico first 2 days) are the month's major domestic events. Christmas markets open late November across Europe.

Kyoto momiji peak

Late November peak (around November 20-25). Eikan-do's illuminated evening viewings. Kifune Shrine in the north. Book hotels 4-6 months ahead; restaurants 2-3 months.

Caribbean post-hurricane second season

Hurricane season officially ends November 30, and practically ends early November. Trinidad, Barbados, Grenada have pleasant weather through March.

Patagonia spring

Torres del Paine fully operational, Southern Ocean season beginning (whale-watching Antarctica prep). Best weather window from late November through February.

Christmas markets opening

Late November — Strasbourg, Nuremberg, Vienna, Prague all open. First 2 weeks are quietest and best weather. Peak crowds from mid-December.

Our Christmas Markets hub

Thanksgiving week (US)

Fourth Thursday of November; the week is Americas busiest domestic-travel week. International travel that week can be a relative quiet alternative.

Plan ahead this month
  • Final Christmas markets trip logistics
  • Winter-sun Caribbean (Jan-March)
  • Aurora trips (prime Dec-Feb window)
Consider avoiding
  • !US domestic travel Thanksgiving week
  • !Japan Kansai region on the single-peak momiji weekend if crowd-averse
12

December

Christmas markets peak, Caribbean + Southeast Asia + Australia sunshine peak, and the year's most expensive week for travel (December 23-January 2).

December splits into two halves. First half: shoulder season for most of Europe (Christmas markets active, pre-holiday travel manageable). Last 10 days: peak global holiday travel. Caribbean and Southeast Asia are at peak pricing (30-50% above shoulder). Australian summer peaks. Aurora season at full strength. Skiing operational everywhere. December has the longest holiday-related travel premium of any month — the cheap-to-expensive shift within 3 weeks is the steepest of the year.

Christmas markets peak

Strasbourg, Vienna, Prague, Cologne all at their atmospheric peak in the first 3 weeks. Last 10 days often close (markets wind down before Christmas).

Our Christmas Markets hub

Caribbean + Southeast Asia peak

Turks & Caicos, Thailand, Bali all at peak weather + peak pricing. Hotels 40-60% above shoulder. Book 6-8 months ahead for desirable properties.

Australian summer

Peak southern summer. Sydney Harbour at 26°C, Melbourne 24-28°C, Uluru 32-38°C (hot). New Year's Eve Sydney Harbour is the world's most-watched fireworks.

Aurora season peak

Iceland, Finnish Lapland, Tromsø all at peak. Dark 18+ hours per day. Book at least 4 months ahead for February travel.

New Year's Eve destinations

Sydney Harbour, London Thames, New York Times Square, Dubai fireworks, Rio Copacabana. All require 2-3 months ahead for accommodation if you want to actually see the event.

Plan ahead this month
  • Summer 2026 (Mediterranean, 6 months)
  • Sakura 2026 (final call — 3-4 months)
  • African safari peak 2026 (6-9 months)
Consider avoiding
  • !December 23-January 2 travel if price-sensitive — the single most expensive week of the year globally
  • !European city Christmas Eve and Day specifically — most restaurants and services closed
