The Maldives, at low tide — 18 minutes of boat, the rest of the week quiet
Thursday · April 18, 2026 · № 184
— Issue № 184

The Maldives, at low tide.

Low tide at Kunfunadhoo happens quietly. The water does not roll back so much as slip away — a receding hush that turns the lagoon from glass to sand over the course of an hour. You can walk, for a while, to places that were ocean forty minutes ago.

I went to the Maldives with the intention of writing nothing. Eighteen minutes by seaplane, then a week of notebooks kept deliberately empty. The answer, mostly, is: it works. Not the way you think.
