10 Days in Morocco: Marrakech, the Atlas, and the Sahara

A 10-day Morocco itinerary — Marrakech, an Atlas Mountain crossing, two nights in the Sahara, Fez, and a final day in coastal Essaouira.

By Noa Katz · Verified April 2026

Morocco in 10 days works as a loop out of Marrakech. Three nights in Marrakech, a two-day 4x4 crossing of the Atlas Mountains to a Sahara desert camp, two nights in Fez, and a final two nights on the Atlantic coast at Essaouira before returning to Marrakech to fly out. Trip is hire-driver-led; don't drive yourself on the mountain passes.

Day by day

Each day is written to balance structure with breathing room. Named hotels, named meals, named activities; logistics noted where they matter.

Day 1

Arrive Marrakech · Jemaa el-Fnaa evening

Land at RAK, 20-minute taxi to a riad in the medina. Afternoon settling in. Evening on Jemaa el-Fnaa — the snake charmers, storytellers, orange-juice vendors, grilled-meat stalls after dark. Dinner at a riad rooftop (Nomad, Le Jardin, or your riad's).

Stay:Royal Mansour or La Mamounia (or a riad in the medina) · Medina-inside classic Marrakech
  • Jemaa el-Fnaa evening
  • Dinner at Nomad or Le Jardin
Logistics: RAK → medina: taxi MAD 100 / $10
Day 2

Marrakech · Medina souks + palaces

Morning with a local guide through the souks (it is genuinely hard to navigate alone; spring for a half-day guide). Bahia Palace + Saadian Tombs. Lunch at Nomad. Afternoon at the Majorelle Garden + Yves Saint Laurent Museum (book tickets). Evening at the Marrakech-newer Nomad bar or a hammam ritual.

  • Souk guided walk
  • Bahia Palace
  • Majorelle Garden + YSL Museum
  • Traditional hammam at Royal Mansour or La Mamounia
Day 3

Marrakech · Day off or Ourika Valley

Half-day trip into the Ourika Valley (1h out of Marrakech — Berber villages, a small waterfall hike). Back in Marrakech for afternoon shopping or a second riad afternoon. Dinner at Comptoir Darna (show-dinner) or the classic Le Trou au Mur.

  • Ourika Valley drive
  • Riad rooftop afternoon
  • Dinner at Le Trou au Mur
Day 4

Marrakech → Atlas + Ait Ben Haddou

First day of the 4x4 loop. Driver picks up at 08:00. Over the Tizi n'Tichka pass (2,260m) to Ait Ben Haddou — the 11th-century ksar fortress village used in Lawrence of Arabia, Gladiator, and Game of Thrones. Lunch below the ksar. Afternoon to Ouarzazate and a desert-edge kasbah-hotel for the night.

Stay:Dar Ahlam (Skoura) or Le Berbère Palace (Ouarzazate) · Kasbah-style Atlas-edge

  • Ouarzazate film studios (if time)
Logistics: Hire-driver 4x4 with English-speaking guide
Day 5

Sahara crossing · Overnight camp

Drive east through the Dades Valley (the 'Valley of a Thousand Kasbahs') to Merzouga on the Algerian border. Camel trek 45 minutes into the Erg Chebbi dunes to a desert camp. Sunset on a 150m dune; Berber dinner under the stars.

The most intact medieval medina in the Arab world — 9,000 alleyways, and genuinely impossible without a guide. Full-day walking with a licensed guide: the Chouara tanneries (the leather-dying pits), the Al-Qarawiyyin university (founded 859 CE, the oldest continuously operating university in the world), the Medersa Bou Inania. Dinner at Nur (10-course Moroccan tasting).

  • Drive to Marrakech (3h)
Logistics: Essaouira → RAK: 3h drive
