Pros & cons

Pros

  • 10x on CitiTravel hotels is the highest earn rate on any portal at any fee tier
  • The 3x category set is unusually broad — most other $95 cards force a choice between travel and everyday spend
  • ThankYou transfer partners include Turkish and Wyndham — different sweet spots than Chase or Amex
  • $100 hotel credit against a $95 fee makes the card effectively free for anyone booking a hotel through Citi Travel

Cons

  • CitiTravel.com is a weaker portal than Chase Travel or Capital One Travel — pricing is occasionally not competitive
  • Trip protection is thinner than Chase Sapphire Preferred at the same fee
  • Citi Bank customer service quality is inconsistent vs Chase or Amex
  • ThankYou is the smallest of the three major transferable-points ecosystems by partner count and per-point value

Our take

The Strata Premier (formerly Citi Premier) is the most-forgotten strong travel card in the market. On paper the specs are extraordinary for a $95 fee — 10x on portal hotels, 3x on air/gas/groceries/dining, a $100 hotel credit that offsets the annual fee. In practice, most points-and-miles content skews Chase and Amex because those readerships are bigger, so Citi gets overlooked.

For a household that hits multiple 3x categories, this card out-earns the Chase Sapphire Preferred on ongoing spend. CSP earns 3x on dining and 3x on online groceries; Strata Premier earns 3x on dining AND 3x on gas AND 3x on supermarkets (in-store or online) AND 3x on air travel. On a $2,000/month spend spread across those categories, that is 24,000 more points per year than CSP would earn on the same spend.

The trade-off is the transfer network. Chase has Hyatt and United; Amex has ANA and Air Canada. Citi has Turkish Airlines — an outstanding partner for domestic American Airlines flights at 10k miles each way — and Wyndham for cheap Vacasa redemptions. If those specific sweet spots match your travel patterns, the Strata Premier is the best $95 card in the market. If not, the Sapphire Preferred remains the more versatile pick.
