- Balance-transfer users looking for a long 0% intro period
Pros & cons
Pros
- 2% flat is the benchmark rate — no other cashback card meaningfully exceeds it without categories
- Paired with Citi Premier or Strata Premier, the 2% converts to 2 ThankYou points transferable to 15+ partners
- No annual fee — real lifetime keeper
- Long balance-transfer intro period is genuinely useful for consumers paying down debt
Cons
- To earn the full 2%, you must pay on time — the second 1% only credits when the balance is paid off
- 3% foreign transaction fee — do not take this card abroad
- Standalone cashback only; transfer-partner access requires holding a Citi Premier or Strata Premier
- Citi ThankYou is the weakest of the three major transferable-points programs by valuation
Our take
The Citi Double Cash is the honest baseline. If you do not want to think about categories, do not want to build a card ecosystem, and just want the highest flat cashback rate available with no annual fee, this is the card. 2% on everything — 1% when you swipe, 1% when you pay — has been the industry benchmark for a decade, and nothing at the no-fee tier has topped it.
The sophisticated play is pairing. If you also hold a Citi Strata Premier ($95 annual fee) or the legacy Premier, your Double Cash cashback converts into ThankYou points that transfer to Turkish Airlines, Air France Flying Blue, Singapore KrisFlyer, and 13 other partners. That converts 2% cashback into what is effectively 2 transferable points per dollar — the same effective rate as the Chase Trifecta at a lower overhead.
The one thing to watch is the foreign transaction fee. Every other cashback card in this review can be used abroad without penalty; the Double Cash tacks on 3%, which erases the 2% cashback and then some. Keep the Double Cash as your domestic daily spender and pair it with a no-foreign-fee card for travel. Zero annual fee makes it an easy keeper regardless.
