Hotel elite status is the difference between paying for breakfast, paying for the club lounge, paying for an upgrade, and getting all three included. Earning elite status the traditional way takes 40-75 hotel nights a year. A credit card can hand it to you on approval.

Below are the four cards that give you the most valuable elite status for the annual fee. We ranked by the practical value of the status benefits — breakfast, upgrades, late checkout, lounge access — not the tier name on the card.

How we ranked

#1 · Best overall — top-tier status + credits that exceed the fee

Hilton Honors Aspire

Rating 4.7Annual fee $550Welcome bonus 175,000 bonus points

Automatic Hilton Diamond status is the top tier — free breakfast, executive lounge access at properties that have one, room upgrades, late checkout to 4pm. Diamond normally requires 60 qualifying nights or 100K base points. Add $400 in annual Hilton credits, an unrestricted free-night certificate (worth $500-1,200 at top properties), and the math works out overwhelmingly for anyone staying 10+ nights a year at Hilton.

#2 · Best for Ritz-Carlton and St. Regis loyalists

Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant American Express Card

Rating 4.5Annual fee $650Welcome bonus 100,000 + 50,000 bonus points (150,000 total)

Automatic Marriott Platinum status, which delivers free breakfast at Ritz-Carlton and St. Regis, room upgrades, and 4pm late checkout. Platinum normally requires 50 nights. The $300 dining credit is broader than Hilton's Hilton-only credit — it works at any restaurant worldwide — but the free-night certificate is capped at 85K points, less premium than Hilton's unrestricted cert.

#3 · Best value at $95 — worth carrying for the free night alone

World of Hyatt Credit Card

Rating 4.6Annual fee $95Welcome bonus Up to 75,000 bonus points

Discoverist status is only mid-tier (below Globalist), but the World of Hyatt card is still worth carrying for the annual Category 1-4 free night alone — regularly redeeming for $250-400 in cash-equivalent value at a $95 annual fee. If you are chasing Hyatt Globalist status, this card also accelerates it with 5 base tier-qualifying nights annually plus 2 more per $5K spent.

#4 · Best for hotel-agnostic travelers

The Platinum Card from American Express

Rating 4.4Annual fee $895Welcome bonus Up to 175,000 Membership Rewards points

Complimentary Marriott Bonvoy Gold and Hilton Honors Gold status — one tier below Platinum/Diamond, but still gets you late checkout, room upgrades where available, and 25% points bonuses. Not the reason to get the Platinum, but a nice add-on for occasional stayers who do not want to commit to one specific hotel loyalty program.

The bottom line

For anyone who actually stays at Hilton properties, the Aspire is one of the highest-ROI premium cards on the market. Top-tier Diamond status plus $400 in Hilton credits plus an unrestricted free-night certificate exceeds the $550 fee mechanically — this is not a card that requires you to be optimizing to get value.

For Marriott loyalists, the Bonvoy Brilliant is the direct path to Platinum. For occasional Hyatt travelers, the World of Hyatt card at $95 is one of the best point-for-point deals in the industry. If you are hotel-agnostic and want soft-benefit upgrades everywhere, the Amex Platinum's dual Gold statuses cover more ground with less commitment.
