Vomero

Naples' hilltop neighbourhood — the Belvedere views, the Certosa di San Martino monastery, and the calmer residential uplands reached by funicular

familiesreturning visitorssolo travellers
— The Neighbourhood

Vomero sits 250 metres above Naples' waterfront — reached by three funicular lines (Centrale, Chiaia, Montesanto, all opened in the 1890s). It's a 20th-century residential district where middle-class Neapolitans live away from the centro storico noise, and from the Belvedere di San Martino (next to the monastery) the view of Naples, the bay, Vesuvius, and Capri on a clear day is the city's single best panorama. The district has its own commercial spine (Via Scarlatti), its own cinema culture, and the Villa Floridiana public park that few tourists find. Stay here for quieter nights and one-funicular-ride access to downtown.

Where to eat, drink, and explore

sight

Certosa di San Martino

14th-century Carthusian monastery, now a museum. The cloister is serene; the museum holds Neapolitan nativity scenes (the 18th-century Cuciniello presepe is the masterpiece). The Belvedere beside it has the best Naples view. €6.

sight

Castel Sant'Elmo

The star-shaped fortress (14th century) next to the Certosa. Panoramic 360° view from the rooftop walkway, and the 21st-century Museum of Art (Novecento) inside. €5.

park

Villa Floridiana

A public park and villa (1816-19) on Vomero hill, now housing the Duca di Martina ceramics museum. The park itself is free and one of Naples' most tranquil corners. Closes at sunset.

shop

Gay-Odin

The 1894 chocolate shop on Via Scarlatti — still family-run, still using the original milling equipment. The 'Foresta' chocolate block and the traditional chocolate 'paste' are the specific purchases.

shop

Via Scarlatti pedestrian shopping

Vomero's main commercial axis, pedestrianised in the 2000s. Independent shops, pastry shops, the Pintauro pastry shop (still using the original 1785 sfogliatella recipe), and evening aperitivo bars.

— Where to stay

Sleeping in Vomero

Hotel San Francesco al Monte (converted 16th-century monastery with swimming pool carved into the rock) and the B&B Belvedere San Martino (wonderful-view budget) are the two distinctive Vomero stays. Mid-tier hotels are limited; more are in Chiaia or the centro storico with funicular commute.

— Getting around

How to move

Three funicular lines from downtown: Centrale (Augusteo to Fuga) is the most useful, 8 min climb, €1.30. Metro Line 1 (Vanvitelli, Piazza Fuga stations). Walking within Vomero is flat and pleasant. For the Certosa, the walk up from the funicular is 5 minutes.

FAQ

Vomero: common questions

A half-day at minimum — the Certosa + Belvedere + Castel Sant'Elmo cluster is a solid morning. Stay for lunch at a Vomero trattoria, then descend via funicular to the centro storico for the afternoon.
