It's where Napoli's bourgeoisie has lived since the 1870s, which means the cafés, the shopping (Via Chiaia, Via Filangieri, Via dei Mille for the designer cluster), and the restaurants are priced and paced differently than Spaccanapoli. Villa Comunale — the park between Riviera di Chiaia and the sea — is the neighbourhood's spine. Stay here for a calmer version of Naples, with waterfront walks and no three-storey scooter traffic.

1.3-km linear park between Riviera di Chiaia and the waterfront, laid out 1781. The Casina Pompeiana pavilion houses a small café; the middle section has the Stazione Zoologica aquarium (Europe's oldest, 1872).

Sleeping in Chiaia
The Grand Hotel Parker's (since 1870, Belle Époque, Naples' classic luxury) and the Romeo Hotel (modern glass luxury on the waterfront) are the flagships. Hotel Vesuvio (where Caruso died, still a grande dame) is the Bay-facing classic. Mid-tier: Nettuno Suite Hotel. Budget travellers do better in Spaccanapoli; Chiaia is the more expensive tier.

How to move
Metro Line 6 and Line 2 serve the western edge (Mergellina, Amedeo stations). Funicular Chiaia climbs to Vomero. Walking Villa Comunale and the Riviera is a pleasure. Taxis plentiful. Driving still a Naples-level problem but slightly better than centro storico.
