Mitte

Berlin's central district — Museum Island, government buildings, and the tourist Berlin

first-time visitorsshort tripshistory-focused travellers
— The Neighbourhood

Mitte means 'middle', and the neighbourhood lives up to the name — it contains most of Berlin's big-ticket sights (Brandenburg Gate, Reichstag, Museum Island, Checkpoint Charlie, Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe), most of the hotel inventory, and most of the day-trippers. Stay here for a short sightseeing trip where walking distance matters more than neighbourhood character; skip it for a longer stay or a repeat visit. Mitte is split: the east half around Hackescher Markt and Rosenthaler Platz feels alive and residential; the area immediately around Brandenburg Gate can feel like a museum district after 8 p.m. Restaurants range from tourist-grade near the gate to exceptional around Alte Schönhauser Straße.

— Highlights

Where to eat, drink, and explore

sight

Museum Island

Five museums on an island in the Spree — Pergamon, Neues, Altes, Alte Nationalgalerie, Bode. Buy the Museum Pass (€32) rather than individual tickets. Pergamon closed for renovation until 2027.

sight

Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe

Peter Eisenman's 2,711-stele field beside the Tiergarten. Always open, always free, intentionally disorientating. Visit at dusk for the quietest experience.

sight

Hackescher Markt

The connected Hackesche Höfe courtyards — restored 1906 Art Nouveau blocks with boutiques, restaurants, a theatre, and a few quieter cafés deeper in. Skip the main piazza; explore yards 4-8.

restaurant

Katz Orange

German-farm-to-table on Bergstraße — slow-cooked pork shoulder for €26, reserve two weeks ahead for the back garden in summer. Easily the best restaurant in immediate tourist Mitte.

cafe

House of Small Wonder

Japanese-inspired café-restaurant near Rosenthaler Platz — open 8 a.m., breakfast until 4 p.m., no reservations. Green tea and green-tea tiramisu.

— Where to stay

Sleeping in Mitte

Das Stue on Drakestraße (inside Tiergarten) is Berlin's best-kept luxury secret at €350-650/nt — a converted Danish embassy with Michelin-starred dining and wildlife outside your window (zoo-adjacent). Casa Camper on Weinmeisterstraße is €300-400, bright rooms, complimentary snacks all day. Hotel AMANO Grand Central offers value at €150-210, above the main train station for early flights.

— Getting around

How to move

Mitte is Berlin's best-connected district. Every major U-Bahn + S-Bahn line passes through, including Alexanderplatz (U2, U5, U8, S3, S5, S7, S9, S75) and Hauptbahnhof (S+U + regional rail). Within the neighbourhood, walking covers most of the ground — from Brandenburg Gate to Alexanderplatz is 30 minutes. The 100 and 200 buses run tourist-friendly routes past the big sights for the price of a single ticket.

FAQ

Mitte: common questions

For a first 2-3 day trip focused on the big sights (Brandenburg Gate, Reichstag, Museum Island, Checkpoint Charlie), yes — central and walkable. For a longer stay or to get a feel for the real Berlin, Kreuzberg or Prenzlauer Berg offer more.
