Arrive San José · Alajuela
Land at SJO. Rather than stay in San José itself, transfer 10 minutes to Alajuela for a gentler first night. Dinner at Xandari Resort.
- ◆Rest + Xandari spa
Central America is underutilised in multi-country trip planning because the regional infrastructure is less uniform than Europe or Southeast Asia. But three neighbouring countries — Costa Rica (eco-tourism polish), Panama (modern-city + canal + Caribbean islands), Nicaragua (colonial-city + volcanic lakes) — deliver a deeply different feel from each other while connected by cheap Copa Airlines and Avianca flights. This itinerary front-loads Costa Rica for comfortable decompression, adds Panama's urban and Caribbean dimensions, and finishes with Nicaragua's slower pace.
Each day is written to balance structure with breathing room. Named hotels, named meals, named activities; logistics noted where they matter.

Morning drive (2h 30m) north to La Fortuna. Afternoon at hanging bridges in Mistico. Evening at Tabacón Hot Springs.
Morning La Fortuna waterfall + 500-step swim. Afternoon rafting on Sarapiquí River (Class II-III).
The classic jeep-boat-jeep transfer via Lake Arenal (3h 30m). Afternoon in Monteverde town (elevation 1,400m, cooler).
Morning at Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve (3h guided walk). Afternoon Selvatura zip line — the 1km SuperMan cable.
Morning flight SJO → PTY (1h 30m). Check into Casco Viejo hotel. Afternoon walking Panama's old town (UNESCO) — Plaza de la Independencia, the French Plaza, the restored colonial churches.
Morning at Miraflores Locks — watching a container ship pass through Panama Canal locks is genuinely remarkable (90 min). Visitor Center has a small museum. Afternoon back in Casco Viejo. Dinner at Manolo Caracol.
Morning flight PTY → BOC (1h, small plane). Water taxi to Isla Bastimentos or Isla Colón. Afternoon at Red Frog Beach.
Full-day boat trip — dolphins at Dolphin Bay, snorkeling at Cayo Zapatilla (starfish shallows), lunch at a Panamanian-Caribbean restaurant.
Flight BOC → PTY → MGA (4-5h total). Transfer to Granada (1h drive). First night in a restored colonial hotel.
Morning walking tour of Granada (one of the oldest Spanish-founded cities in the Americas, 1524). Afternoon boat tour of Las Isletas — 365 small volcanic islands on Lake Cocibolca. Dinner at El Zaguán.
Morning drive to San Jorge (90 min), ferry to Ometepe (1h). The island is two volcanoes (Concepción active, Maderas dormant) joined by a lava bridge. Afternoon at Charco Verde or Ojo de Agua springs.
Maderas volcano hike (4-6 hours, moderate-strenuous, climbing through cloud forest to a crater lake). Evening back at lodge for sunset over Concepción.
Morning ferry back to mainland, drive Managua (3h total), flight out. International connections via Copa Panama or Avianca San Salvador.
The three deliver genuinely different experiences — Costa Rica is the eco-tourism polished pick, Panama has the modern-city + canal + Caribbean combination, Nicaragua has the colonial-city + volcanic-lake slow-pace. They're short flights apart (Copa hub in Panama City links all three cheaply) so the logistics are manageable.
