10 Days in Mexico: Mexico City, Oaxaca, and the Yucatán

A 10-day Mexico itinerary balancing Mexico City food, Oaxaca culture, and Yucatán archaeology — without the resort-coast default.

By Marcus Johnson · Verified April 2026

The Mexico most first-time visitors miss sits inland: the world-class food scene of Mexico City, the mezcal-craft culture of Oaxaca, the Maya ruins of the Yucatán. This itinerary deliberately avoids the all-inclusive resort coast (Cancun, Riviera Maya) in favour of the culturally and gastronomically dense inland. Three nights in Mexico City, three in Oaxaca, three in Mérida/Yucatán, finished with a quick Caribbean day if desired. Domestic flights connect all three.

FAQ

Mexico itinerary: common questions

Because Mexico City, Oaxaca, and inland Yucatán are what make Mexico culturally extraordinary — and what first-time visitors to resort beaches miss. If you need a beach day, add 2-3 nights at Tulum or Isla Holbox after Mérida. But don't replace the inland itinerary with it.
