Plants are a great addition to your home. But they can be tricky to care for. That means that you\’ll take all the help you can get when it comes to taking care of your green friends. Luckily, we have some tips for you when it comes to watering your plants. Find out more below.
When to water?
The first important question is: when do you need to water your plants? Not all plants need water at the exact same time and that means that your plants all have unique watering needs. To find out whether your plants need water, you can stick your finger in the soil and feel if that soil feels dry. If your plant isn\’t a succulent or a cactus, it will need water when the surface of the soil is dry. Succulents and cacti can go without water for a longer period of time.
How to water
The best method for watering your plants, is by so-called \’bottom watering\’. This means that you put your plant in a pot with a hole in the bottom and place it on a saucer. When you add water to the saucer, the plant will take all the water it needs through the hole in the bottom of the pot. All the excess water can be easily removed after 30 minutes of waiting, making sure that the plant doesn\’t sit in water for too long. Overwatering will cause its roots to rot and eventually will cause the plant to die.
How much water
If you\’re dealing with cacti and succulents, they probably don\’t need a lot of water. All the other plants really want to drink a good amount of fluids. So: add enough water. If the water comes out of the drain hole, you know you\’ve given plenty of water. If the soil is really, really dry, you might want to slowly pour the water in. That way, the roots will be able to actually drink the water instead of it just running out the bottom right away. If there is some space between the soil and the pot, on the side of the pot, you should push the soil back a little to make sure the water will stay in the soil instead of running down the sides.
