Located in the heart of the Caribbean, Roatan boasts a unique blend of natural beauty and culture. Whether you’re drawn to its world-class diving sites, lush rainforests, or simply the natural beauty of its beaches, Roatan promises an unforgettable escape from the everyday hustle and bustle.

Beaches, Parks, and Beauty

West Bay Beach

Of course, we need to start our trip off with a beautiful beach! Look no further than West Bay Beach. Uncrowded and well maintained, this beach consistently ranks among the top in both the Caribbean and Central America. A mile of beach lined with palm trees, clear water, and white sand. Swimmers can rest easily, as the geography of the beach ensures calm waters and few predators. Perfect for those looking to enjoy time with their young ones. The beach hosts a number of activities, including scuba diving, snorkeling, horseback riding, parasailing, as well as sailboat and jet ski rentals. However, the biggest attraction might be the coral reefs that are only a few feet away from the shore. We suggest some night diving, as the bioluminescent coral and animals are easier to spot in the shallow waters. If you happen to visit in May, you can catch the Caribbean Cup; a free-diving competition that attracts some of the top free-divers in the world. Reaching the beach is simple as it is linked by airport, ferry, cruise docks, taxis and even car rentals. Lastly, West Bay is filled with plenty of hotels, restaurants, shops, that will allow you to enjoy the beach and then relax in comfort.

Gumbalimba Park

Gumbalimba Park is the perfect spot for those of you traveling with kids. The park is spread across 20 acres of beachfront and is located just outside of our previously mentioned attraction, West Bay Beach. Founded in 2003 and named after the locally found Gumbalimba tree, it serves as a botanical garden and animal sanctuary. Your children will have no shortage of fun, as they can check out the almost 2,500 preserved insects from across the world or wander through the park’s myriad of jungle trails. The park also allows you to interact with Capuchin monkeys, so be sure to bring a camera! Flowers and plant species dot the landscape with over 200 species visible for guests. Your kids can also live like buccaneers and explore the pirate’s cave, complete with maps, weapons, and artwork that explores the history of the islands. Lastly, what trip to a tropical paradise would be complete without a visit to the Monkey Trail Canopy? The zip line tour offers 17 platforms that will have you cruising through the jungle 60ft from the ground. A beautiful view of the canopy and Caribbean Sea will have you asking yourself, when are we coming back?! The prices can vary depending on the type of activity you’re looking for, so be sure to research prior to your visit.

The Roatan Institute for Marine Sciences

The Roatan Institute for Marine Sciences was founded in 1989 by the owners of Anthony’s Key Resort as a way to preserve the islands natural resources, through public education and research. The institute, also known as RIMS, has become an important destination over the past 25 years for those looking to learn and study marine topics. RIMS main complex is the Education center, which houses the dry laboratory, as well as the Roatan Museum. More recently, a second building was created with dorm rooms, a wet laboratory, as well as a dive gear storage room. Due to its close proximity to barrier reefs, seagrass beds, mangroves, and other aquatic life, the institute serves as an excellent establishment for preservation, conservation, and education. If all this isn’t enough, Anthony’s Key Resort also offers accommodation, a spa, a restaurant, tours, and full vacation packages! Once you check in you may never leave!

Carambola Botanical Gardens & Nature Trails

It is evident when visiting Roatan that a significant amount of the community and culture of the island is based around the connection to nature. As with Carambola Gardens, conservation and education are at the forefront of your visit. With 40 acres of jungle to explore, there will be no shortage of birds, monkeys, or beautiful native plants. Make your way up to the top of Carambola Mountain and you’ll be rewarded with the natural Iguana species that call the sheer cliffs home. You might also be able to catch a glimpse of the parrot population, as they use this area as their breeding ground. Prices for the Gardens are modest ($10 – $15) and offer the perfect excursion for those looking for more adventure.

From its stunning coral reefs teeming with marine life to its lush landscapes waiting to be discovered, this Caribbean gem offers an unparalleled retreat for travelers seeking both serenity and adventure. Whether you’re indulging in the laid-back island lifestyle or immersing yourself in the rich local culture, Roatan leaves an indelible mark on all who venture to its shores.
