Paraguayan Diversity

Like many Central and South American countries, Paraguay has an interesting history that dates back to when the Spanish Conquistadores arrived in the 1500’s. Their arrival led to the gradual blending and inter-marrying of Europeans and indigenous cultures, resulting in a melting pot of language, art, tradition, food, and many other things that now are uniquely Paraguayan.

Attractions & Exploration

Iguazu Falls

Every year, millions of people come from around the world to witness the natural beauty of Iguazu falls. Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay all have views of the falls, and this provides each country with the perfect destination for both tourists and locals alike. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1984, it attracts around 1.5m – 2.0m tourists a year. At its highest, the falls drop a staggering 82 meters and at its most wide is 2,700 meters. The falls were first discovered by a Spanish explorer named Alvar Nunez Cabeza de Vaca. Brazil and Argentina have better views of the falls, but it is still worth a trip to see the beauty of mother nature. Both Brazil and Argentina share the Iguazu National Park, indicating the popularity of the site.

Asuncion, the Capital City

While Asuncion may not be the first South American city that comes to mind, it certainly is one of the richest in terms of culture and history. It is one of the oldest cities in South America, having been founded in 1537 by Spanish explorers. This has led the city to experience a blending of cultures through indigenous Gurani and Spanish customs. The history and architecture are evident when you see the Government Palace or Metropolitan Cathedral. Due to its location, you will have beautiful views of the Paraguay river that runs through the city. The Costanera de Asuncion is a waterfront promenade that is a popular spot for tourists and locals.

Jesuit Missions of La Santísima Trinidad de Paraná and Jesús de Tavarangue

The Jesuit Missions of La Santisima Trinidad de Parana and Jesus de Tavarangue are religious missions that were founded by Jesuit missionaries during the colonization of South America in the 17th century. Both sites are now listed as World Heritage Sites by UNESCO in 1993. The ruins are well preserved and make great attractions for those willing to step back in time.

Cerro Corá National Park

Cerro Cora National Park, Paraguay’s largest national park, is located in northeastern Paraguay and is well-known for its amazing scenery and rich biodiversity. Cerra Cora translates to Corral of Hills, which is a fitting name when you see that the park is surrounded by hills. In addition to the environmental richness of the landscape, it includes interesting geological formations and natural tourist attractions. The park is rich in wildlife, such as jaguars, deer, foxes, monkeys, birds, flora, fauna and many other species. Currently, there are no fees or permits that are needed to visit the park. However, a word of caution, this park can be difficult to get to and is about 454 km from the capital of Asuncion. Ensure that you’ve properly prepared when it comes to transportation, as well as with any supplies that are needed for the journey to and from.

Ybycuí National Park

Paraguay has no shortage of beautiful parks, and Ybycui is no exception. Located about 2 hours from Asuncion, across 5,000 hectares it may be your best chance of exploration if you’re unwilling to trek to Cerro Cora. As part of the Atlantic Forest eco-region, there are many pathways and roads that allow you to explore the forests and scenery. This park also includes smaller waterfalls that are perfect if you’d like to cool off during your excursions. As with all parks in Paraguay, it is teeming with animals, flora and fauna. Paraguay has put considerable resources into conservation efforts so that current and future generations can enjoy the natural beauty. Be sure to show your appreciation by treating the parks and those that manage and visit it with respect.

A trip to Paraguay offers a blend of cultural richness, natural beauty, and warm hospitality. From historic landmarks to scenic landscapes, each experience leaves a lasting impression. Paraguay welcomes travelers to explore its diverse offerings and create unforgettable memories. Who knows, maybe you’ll have some extra time to visit one of the neighboring countries as well!
